Take Care Of Those Dogs                From Parish Nursing Dept

To keep ants from ruining a picnic, draw a chalk circle around plates on the picnic table or the picnic area.

You can also use talcum powder if you are picnicking on a blanket.

Ants won't cross either the chalk line or talcum because of the smell and texture

Try it!

The dogs in question are your feet! Protect your feet because you don't go any-where without them and when they hurt! WOW!

The wrong shoe is often the source of all your trouble!

bullet

Only wear shoes that fit correctly - ill fitting

           shoes are hard to

           walk in.

bullet

Purchase your shoes in the evening

bullet

Wear proper socks

bullet

Tie your shoe laces

bullet

Wear the right foot-wear for the task you

           are performing.

One of the most common reasons for dogs to bark is burning feet. If you have unexplained burning in your feet you should be tested for diabetes.

Diabetes can cause severe burning sensations in your feet. The treatment for the diabetes also controls the burning.

Another reason some individuals experience burning feet is a pinched nerve. Treatment can include physical therapy, rest, shoe inserts, medication or surgery.

After ruling out diabetes or a pinched nerve you can try these tips to keep 'em cool:

bullet

Natural leather shoes are the best!

bullet

Wear only shoes that allow perspiration to

           evaporate. "Man
           made" leather or
           water-proof or lined
           shoes/ boots may
           block ventilation.

bullet

Carry an extra pair of socks to change into mid-day.

bullet

Only wear socks that are made of natural fibers such as cotton and wool.

bullet

Retire all threadbare socks to the rag pile.

bullet

Kick off your shoes at every opportunity.

bullet

Avoid wearing the same pair of shoes two days in a row. Give your sweaty shoes plenty of time to dry out between wearings.

Athlete's foot is another common complaint that leaves those "dogs" howling! To help combat Athlete's feet try these tips:

bullet

Don't wear the same shoes two days in a row.

bullet

Keep your feet dry. The Athlete's foot fungus does not grow in dry environments. Only wear socks that are made of cotton.

bullet

Use a hair dryer on the lowest/ coolest setting to dry between your toes.

bullet

Use over-the-counter products for treating Athlete's feet long after the symptoms disappear because the fungus that causes Athlete's feet may

           linger.

bullet

Always wear rubber thongs or shoes made to be worn in water whenever you use public showers, pools or gyms.

bullet

Never use a hydrocortisone cream on a fungal infection!

Ingrown toenails also cause the "dogs" to whine and whimper. Ingrown toenails usually develop when an improperly trimmed toenail cuts into the skin at the edge of the nail or when you weal shoes that are too tight. Try these tips:

bullet

Wear roomy shoes and keep your feet clean and dry.

bullet

Soak your feet to softer your toenails before trimming them.

bullet

Cut toenails straight across and leave the nails a little longer at the corners so that the sharp ends don't cut into your skin.
