Summer Trip to

Altoona

The summer trip to Altoona is scheduled for Saturday, June 7, 2003.  We will meet at the Centre Street UM Church parking lot at 9:15 a.m.  The bus will leave for Lakemont Park in Altoona at 9:30 a.m.  We will pick up the tickets for the amusement park when we get to the park and distribute them to everyone.  We will also give everyone his or her baseball tickets at that time.  The amusement park opens at 11:00 a.m. The baseball game starts at 7:00 p.m.   The baseball stadium is adjacent to the amusement park.  People can walk from the park to the baseball stadium for the game whenever they want to.  We will not meet and go over as a group.  Once the game is over, everyone should proceed immediately to the bus for the return trip.  The amusement park and the stadium share a parking facility.  The day promises to be fun, but will be long.  Therefore, please be courteous to everyone else and get to the bus after the game as soon as possible.  If you want to buy souvenirs, please do so before the game ends.

The cost of the trip is $22.45 per person.  If you want to have some of a scout's pack credit apply to the cost, please notify Cheryl Miller at tonight's meeting.  The cost should be paid by tonight's meeting.  If you cannot pay by tonight, please let Jamie Walsh know at tonight's meeting.

Summer Activities

The pack is required to hold three summer activities.  The trip to Altoona will be the June activity.  The July activity will be the bike ride on the C & O Canal on Saturday, July 12.  Those who are going to ride should meet at the Riverside Sports Field Complex shortly before 10:00 a.m.  The group will leave at 10:00 a.m. and ride southeast to the picnic area below the old PPG Plant.  The group should arrive at approximately noon.  The pack will provide hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks.  Scouts and their families should bring additional food, such as chips.  Everyone is invited to bring sports and other recreational equipment for the event.  Those who do not wish to ride can hike.  The hikers will meet at the Spring Gap parking area and hike northwest to the picnic area below the PPG Plant.  The hikers should also meet shortly before 10:00 a.m. and should arrive at the picnic area by noon.  There is no fee for this event.  Den Leaders should procure a count of all people who will attend and notify Jamie Walsh at least one week beforehand, so that the pack knows how much food it will need to procure.

The August summer event will be a picnic at Rocky Gap State Park on Saturday, August 9. The picnic will begin at 11:00 a.m.  The Pack will provide hot dogs, hamburgers and drinks.  Scouts and their families should bring any   other   food that they want.  The scouts are welcome to bring sporting and other recreational equipment. Hiking, swimming and fishing are available.  Those wanting to fish should bring their own equipment. There is no fee for this event.  Den Leaders should let Jamie Walsh know how many from each den will attend at least one week before this event so that the Pack knows how much food to bring.  The Pack will also be able to let the Den Leaders know at that time exactly where the picnic will be.

PLANNING MEETING

The planning meeting to establish the Pack Schedule of events for next year will be held at Centre Street UM Church on Sunday, June 1, 2003 at 6:30 p.m.  All Den Leaders should attend.  Any other interested parents are encouraged to attend as well.

Den/Pack Leaders

All parents are encouraged to be active in their dens and in the Pack.  Scouting is not possible without adult volunteer leadership.  Scouting provides substantial benefits to your children and you are encouraged to participate actively in the process.

Next year's Pack Leadership will consist primarily of people whose sons will be second year Webelos and their last year in scouting.  We need an assistant treasurer to work with Cheryl Miller.  It is important that a parent of one of the younger children take this position so that he or she can "learn the ropes" from Cheryl throughout the year and be in a position to take over for the following year.   The position is critical for insuring that the Pack has sufficient funds to provide for trips, awards and special occasions, such as the Pine Wood Derby and the Blue and Gold Banquet.

Communication

We will need to communicate with the parents of all scouts at times during the summer and beginning of next scout year.  Please make sure that your Den Leader has your telephone number and e-mail address (if you have one).  Den Leaders should maintain this information and provide a copy of it to Pack Leadership.  We want to make sure that no one misses any events.  We also need to be able to contact Den Leaders in the event of weather postponements.  Den Leaders, in turn, need to be able to notify parents of weather related cancellations.
